Terms of Service

Last updated October 28, 2026

The short version

1. Agreeing to these terms

These terms are an agreement between you and Backstep ("we", "us"). They cover the Backstep software, including the backstep command-line tool, its Claude Code add-on and dashboard (together, "Backstep"), and this website. By installing, running or using Backstep, or by using this website, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use Backstep. If you use Backstep for a company, you're agreeing on its behalf and confirm you're allowed to.

2. What Backstep is

Backstep is software that runs on your own computer. It sits alongside AI coding tools, such as Claude Code and Cursor, and the tools and services they use, and tries to save a copy of things before they change so the change can be undone later.

Backstep does not use AI itself and does not control the AI tools you use. It is an independent project and is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with Anthropic, Cursor, Supabase, Google, Firebase or any other company named on this site. Their names and trademarks belong to them and are used only to describe what Backstep works with.

3. Your permission to use Backstep

We give you a free, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable permission to install and use Backstep, for personal or work projects. You may not sell Backstep, pass it off as your own, remove its notices, or use it to break the law or harm others. We keep all rights we don't expressly give you here.

4. Backstep can fail, so keep your own backups

Undo is not guaranteed. In particular:

You agree to keep your own independent backups (for example, version control for your code and regular backups of your databases), and to test Backstep before relying on it for anything important, including production systems.

5. You're in charge of your AI tools and your data

You decide which AI tools to use, what they're allowed to do and what you connect them and Backstep to. AI tools can make mistakes, and you are responsible for reviewing and supervising what they do, and for every action they take on your behalf. You're also responsible for having the right to use any code, data, accounts and systems you use with Backstep, including data that belongs to your clients, employer or users.

6. Your accounts and passwords

When you connect a service such as Supabase, Backstep uses your own login or connection details, on your computer, to reach it. Those details stay on your computer and are never sent to us. Keeping your computer and accounts secure is your responsibility.

7. Other companies' services

Backstep works with tools and services run by other companies, such as AI tools, databases, hosting and MCP servers. Those have their own terms and privacy policies, and we're not responsible for them, for how they work or for any changes they make that stop Backstep from working with them.

8. No warranty

BACKSTEP AND THIS WEBSITE ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR REQUIRED BY LAW, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, OR THAT BACKSTEP WILL BE ERROR-FREE, UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ABLE TO SAVE OR RESTORE ANY FILE, CODE OR DATA. YOU USE BACKSTEP AT YOUR OWN RISK.

9. Limits on our responsibility

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO BACKSTEP OR THIS WEBSITE, INCLUDING LOST, DELETED, CHANGED OR CORRUPTED CODE, FILES OR DATA; FAILED, INCOMPLETE OR INCORRECT BACKUPS OR UNDOS; ACTIONS TAKEN BY ANY AI TOOL OR THIRD-PARTY SERVICE; DOWNTIME; SECURITY INCIDENTS; LOST PROFITS, REVENUE, BUSINESS OR GOODWILL; OR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE POSSIBLE. IF WE ARE FOUND LIABLE ANYWAY, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS TOGETHER WILL NOT BE MORE THAN FIFTY US DOLLARS ($50).

Some places don't allow certain warranties to be excluded or liability to be limited. Where that's the case, these sections apply as far as the law there allows.

10. Covering us if you're sued

If someone brings a claim against us because of how you used Backstep, the data or systems you used it with, what your AI tools did, or your breaking these terms, you agree to cover our reasonable losses and costs from that claim, including legal fees, to the extent the law allows.

11. Changes, and stopping

We may change, pause or stop Backstep or this website at any time, and we may update these terms. When we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page. If you keep using Backstep after that, you accept the updated terms. You can stop at any time: run backstep unwrap, uninstall the package and delete the ~/.backstep folder. Sections 4 through 10 and 12 keep applying after you stop.

12. Disputes

If you have a problem with Backstep, email us first and give us 30 days to try to sort it out informally. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the state where Backstep's owner lives, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a part right away, we haven't given it up. These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about Backstep.
